This month, we’re taking comfort food to a whole new level with our featured Dish of the Month: Kansas City BBQ Chili. A hearty blend of smoky BBQ flavors and traditional chili warmth, this dish is perfect for chilly evenings, family gatherings, or when you’re simply craving a big bowl of comfort.

Why Kansas City BBQ Chili?

Known for its rich, tangy, and sweet barbecue traditions, Kansas City serves as the inspiration behind this soul-warming chili recipe. It’s not your average chili—this version infuses the classic hearty flavors with a bold BBQ twist, making it a standout addition to any table.

What Makes It Special?

The secret lies in its layers of flavor. A combination of mild Italian sausage and ground beef gives this chili a robust, savory base. Add in the smoky sweetness of your favorite BBQ sauce (we recommend Sweet Baby Ray’s!) and the richness of Worcestershire sauce, and you have a dish that’s both comforting and unforgettable.

The mix of crushed and diced tomatoes, chili beans, and black beans creates the perfect texture, while classic spices like chili powder, garlic powder, and onion powder tie everything together.

The Recipe

Here’s how to bring this comforting masterpiece to life:

Ingredients:

  • 1 lb Mild Italian Sausage

  • 1 lb Ground Beef

  • 1 Small Onion, Diced

  • 3 Cloves Garlic, Minced or Grated

  • 1 Tablespoon Chili Powder

  • 1 Tablespoon Garlic Powder

  • 1 Tablespoon Onion Powder

  • 1 teaspoon Salt

  • 1 28oz can Crushed Tomatoes

  • 1 15oz can Diced Tomatoes

  • 2 15oz cans Chili Beans

  • 1 15oz can Black Beans, Rinsed

  • 1/2 cup Sweet BBQ Sauce (like Sweet Baby Ray’s)

  • 1 Tablespoon Worcestershire Sauce

  • 1 15oz can Water (use an emptied can for measuring)

  • Optional Toppings: Shredded Cheese, Sour Cream, Corn Chips

Directions:

  1. In a 6-quart Dutch oven over medium heat, sauté the diced onion until softened.

  2. Add the sausage and ground beef, breaking it into small pieces as it cooks, and brown thoroughly.

  3. Stir in the garlic and sauté for an additional 3 minutes. Add the chili powder, garlic powder, onion powder, and salt, mixing well.

  4. Keeping the heat on medium, add the crushed tomatoes, diced tomatoes, beans, BBQ sauce, Worcestershire sauce, and water. Stir to combine.

  5. Cover with the lid and cook for 25 minutes on medium-low heat.

  6. Serve with your favorite toppings: shredded cheese, sour cream, and corn chips for that perfect crunch!
